Disk Management Quick Tips

To show or hide the toolbar in My Computer or Windows Explorer

   On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click the toolbar you want to display or hide.

When the command has a check mark next to it, the toolbar is displayed.

To turn on the Active Desktop interface

  1. Right-click the desktop, and point to Active Desktop.
  2. Make sure View as Web Page is selected.

To create a folder

  1. Click the drive in Windows Explorer where you want to create the new folder.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder. The new folder appears with a temporary name.
  3. Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER.

Note
   If you want to create a new folder within a folder, click the folder and then follow steps two and three above.

To move files by dragging instead of using menus

  1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, find the file or folder you want to move.
  2. Make sure the place you want to drag the file or folder to is visible.
  3. Drag the file or folder to the destination.

To quickly send files and folders to another place

  1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the file or folder you want to send.
  2. Point to Send To, and then click the destination.

You can add other destinations to Send To. In the Send To folder, which is located in your Windows folder, create shortcuts to the destinations you send files to often, such as a printer, fax machine, or particular folder.

To delete a file or folder

  1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the file or folder you want to delete.
  2. On the File menu, click Delete.

To change the name of a file or folder

  1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the file or folder you want to rename.
  2. On the File menu, click Rename.
  3. Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

To select multiple files and folders

In the folder window, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each item you want:

  1. To select all the files and folders in the window, on the Edit menu, click Select All.
  2. To select a group of files that are next to each other in Windows Explorer, click in a blank area of the window next to the first or last file in the group. Then drag around the files you want to select.

To determine how much space is available on a disk

  1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the disk you want to check.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.

    A pie chart shows how much free and used space is on the disk.
